In 1963 my father, Max Perutz, nominated Lise Meitner for the Fermi Prize which was indeed awarded to her in 1966 together with her collaborators Hahn and Strassman. There was a sequel to this. In 1996, I gave the Seaborg lectures in Berkeley and visited Glenn Seaborg, the discoverer of plutonium. He reminded me that he had given Lise Meitner the Fermi Prize 30 years earlier and the ceremony took place in our family sitting room because Meitner was in her late eighties and unfit to travel. The award is in the gift of the US President and President Johnson had sent Seaborg, who was one of his close advisers to Cambridge and there is still a photo of the event in the family album. ( I can send a copy of the photo if you're interested.) There is a wonderful statue of Meitner by Anna Schwarzbach at the Humboldt University in Berlin that i saw this year. In addition, there is a speaking commentary which is also very special. Robin Perutz
