I was allowed to have the keys for the lab for two years after I finished my master degree, continuing to try to crystalize complexes with two transition metals and magnetic exchange. I didn't get any other publication out of it, but I got a deeper understanding for chemistry that year. Especially Pearson acid base theory. And two bad about that tiny corner of a cobalt complex vanished on the floor, after a neighboring professor had mounted it on a glass needle for me a late evening. Because all the other crystals were too twinned to solve the structure. All solutions came up as overlapping ghosts.
I still have a lot of ideas; but to do something similar at home in a world that still has chemophobia after all the European science-fobia of the eighties and the nineties... Perhaps twenty years from now when the most chemophobic are retired??
