In grad school, we had a photographer come in once for a shoot to make some promotional materials for the chemistry program, and I can tell you, these are totally true! We huddled, looking intently at some colored solutions in test tubes (which really were part of my research, but nothing worth looking intently at), posed with glassware in front of hoods decorated with fancy chemical structures on the glass (that part was normal, but not how clean the hoods were on the inside!), and weighed out brightly colored compounds (also my real research) on our nicest-looking balance. Also plenty of prominent women and BAME group members, but our research group was pretty much 50% female and 70% BAME, anyway, so that wasn't staged! In contrast to most of these photos, though, you'd better believe we had on proper PPE for our photo shoot!
