I am an old scientist, PhD 1973. One reason, other than hatred, is apparent to me. It is easier to bring down your competition than it is to elevate yourself. In the US where organic chemistry grades factor heavily into getting into med school it was, and probably still is, common for students to sabotage the results of others in the lab. I saw this in 1963 when I took organic and believe the practice continues. As such people progress, the tools that they employ are likely to become more sophisticated. But the goal remains - eliminate the competition. If convicted, which seems likely, this individual should be prevented from accessing a laboratory for eternity.
