A survey of NIH-grantees in Massachusetts reveals delayed hiring in labs, layoffs, careers being pursued abroad and research scope reductions

More than two-thirds of the researchers in Massachusetts with grants from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) who responded to a survey conducted by The Boston Globe recommend their students consider careers outside academia. The majority of the 367 survey respondents said they delayed hiring in their research labs, and one-third reported they laid off workers. In addition, more than one in six said they have lost researchers to institutions in other countries since President Trump returned to the White House on 20 January of last year.
