I daresay putting forward the observation that the Biosphere is already riddled with unnatural products of chemical tinkering, and that halo-carbons represent a significant concern regarding their persistent presence and toxicity, might put a bit of a damper on the enthusiasm to create these things in the first place. Given the ubiquitous nature of plastics in our environment (a substance designed to last virtually forever insofar as we are concerned, to make something that, more often than not, is to be used once before being discarded) and other persistent organic pollutants, one can't help but come to the conclusion: if we can't recycle it; if it doesn't readily biodegrade into something harmless; and if we can't break it down ourselves without generating something else that is potentially harmful, perhaps we should be making it in the first place.
