More than two-thirds of the researchers in Massachusetts with grants from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) who responded to a survey conducted by The Boston Globe recommend their students consider careers outside academia. The majority of the 367 survey respondents said they delayed hiring in their research labs, and one-third reported they laid off workers. In addition, more than one in six said they have lost researchers to institutions in other countries since President Trump returned to the White House on 20 January of last year.

In December 2025, the Globe polled researchers in Massachusetts who received NIH grants from 2022 to the present, and 68% of the participants said that federal funding cuts and policy changes had ‘moderately’ or ‘significantly’ reduced the scope of their work. Overall, roughly 40% of those surveyed reported that their research institution had rescinded offers to students, staff or postdoctoral researchers, and more than 60% said postdoctoral fellows or staff were laid off.
