Many academics fear that science funding and academic freedom will be smashed by new government

Brazil’s election of far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, a controversial retired military officer who has been dubbed ‘Trump of the Tropics’, as its new president has rattled that country’s science community. There are fears that science funding in Brazil will dry up, along with academic freedom, after Bolsonaro assumes the presidency on 1 January 2019. This worry amongst the nation’s researchers and professors is partly fuelled by Bolsonaro’s campaign proposals to eliminate Brazil’s ministry of science and technology, as well as its environment ministry.
