Agreement with research organisation will launch centre for greener, cleaner drug production
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has partnered with a Brazilian research organisation to create a centre to tackle the environmental impact of discovering and making drugs. The agreement with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) will see the creation of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Chemistry in Brazil and help GSK to meet its target of being carbon neutral by 2050.
FAPESP and GSK have both agreed to invest £400,000 per year in the centre over a 10 year time frame. GSK already supports a similar green chemistry centre at the University of Nottingham in the UK and the two will be forging links to share knowledge and expertise.
The location for the new sustainable chemistry centre has not been finalised yet. Brazilian universities in the state of São Paulo will be asked if they are interested in bidding to host the new centre. Once set up, the green chemistry centre will be working to create greener, cleaner solvents from renewable feedstocks and improve drug synthesis processes.
