Charity will fund 14 new and existing research centres over the next five years

Following an open competition for funds, the Wellcome Trust has announced that it will commit £118 million to fund 14 research centres over the next five years: seven that already exist and seven that will be newly created.

The centres cover a range of research areas across biomedicine and social sciences. The seven new ones include a Centre for Anti-Infectives Research at the University of Dundee and a Centre for Infectious Diseases Research at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

‘Wellcome Centres play a special role in the global research ecosystem. By creating places where researchers can flourish we can catalyse world-leading research and translation,’ said the Trust’s director Jeremy Farrar in a statement.
